Maria and Natasha Arendt come from a famous Moscow dynasty of sculptors and painters, they grew up in the well-known artists community of Maslovka, where in the studio of their grandparents, Ariadna Arendt, Meyer Aizenshtadt and Anatoly Grigoriev, they embarked on their artistic voyage. The artists now live in different countries; Maria in Moscow and Natasha in London, but continue to work together. They spend several months a year at their family home in the Crimean seaside village of Koktebel where in their summer studio, many collaborative pieces are born. Maria and Natasha often exhibit together, participating in large exhibitions such as the 5th Moscow Biennale. The exhibition "Kuriniy Bog" (Chicken God) is named after a sea pebble with a hole, which was treated as a sacred talisman by the Crimean Tartars, who believed it brought health and prosperity to its owner. But it was also revered by the poets and artists of Russia’s silver age who gathered in Koktebel’s creative cradle, the house of Russian painter and poet Maximilian Voloshin. There they would collect the pebbles, treating the smaller stones as prized items of jewellery or talismans, while larger stones were used as interior decoration. In true Koktebel tradition, the Arendt sisters also maintain a collection of chicken gods. For them these special stones are almost living beings: old friends or family members, who hold memories, posess character, charm and a sense of humour.
